Hendon has moved on from its heyday as the prime source of horse feed in London. Urban sprawl has superimposed itself on the open fields, and the sky above is a rash of spume from Heathrow jets, one every minute. Not a fashionable place to live, it's said. But the High Downs retains a certain pastoral laziness, a straw-in-the teeth mentality. The people live here in their fashion, fashioning a life that deserves celebration. Long may they. Augustus Young's 'Lampion and His Bandits: Literature of the Cordel in Brazil' was published by Menard in 1994. His latest book is 'Light Years', a prose chronicle (London Magazine editions / Enitharmon Press, 2002). he has worked as an epidemiologist in London.
